Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are administered during an annual exam to allow a better view of your teeth and gums. They allow dentists like Dr. Kathy Jacobsen to diagnose problems that are not visible, and to learn about the health of the inside of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. There are numerous dental and oral problems that can be determined from digital x-rays such as tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone loss, and impactions. When these problems are found early, they can be treated more efficiently with more treatment options. During your annual dental exam at Contemporary Dentistry in Gilbert, AZ, digital x-rays will help Dr. Jacobsen more accurately diagnose and treat oral health issues.

"Great dentistry. Kathy the dentist is the the best. She did my venures and I absolutely love them. I wouldnt go any where else. She was never pushy when it came to the decision making for my venures. She was very considerate and took the time to listen, on what concerns I was having. She was very genuine and honest. I get my other dental work done there as well. The hygentists and staff members are amazing too. Always welcoming and going out of there way to make you feel comfortable. Highly recommend. In most cases, digital x-rays are a part of a routine dental exam. They can be administered as a preventive measure or if you are experiencing dental issues of any kind. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional x-rays, Dr. Kathy Jacobsen prefers to minimize the amount of exposure that is delivered to every patient. While they are typically safe for any patient, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should tell Dr. Jacobsen at the beginning of the exam so that extra precautions can be taken.
What to Expect
Typically done at the beginning of a dental cleaning or exam, digital x-rays takes about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all areas of the mouth. After they are taken, they are uploaded and can be viewed by you and Dr. Jacobsen during your appointment. She will be able to assess if there are any abnormalities and discuss what treatments may be needed.
A series of digital x-rays will typically be taken once a year at your annual dental exam. During some visits, a whole mouth series may be taken to get a comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your digital x-rays will be kept with your file at Contemporary Dentistry so Dr. Jacobsen can watch for changes over time and chart any areas of concern.
Typically, a dental insurance plan will cover the cost of digital x-rays as part of a routine dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance provider to determine any costs. For any out-of-pocket expenses or if you don't have dental insurance, our office accepts many payment methods and we can help you find medical financing through our Smiles Club membership.
